Augmented Dream

Inspired by a nightmare of something that happened in China last year. I experienced my death in a lake, I was helpless even though I called for help. No one could hear me. I was exhausted and I was drowning. I know I experienced near-death because I had an immense realisation of reality and it was slipping away as only the sun looked upon me. My life did not flash before me. I only thought of how ludicrous and embarrassing it would be to die drowning in tourist waters and this existential farce is really what saved me, as I summoned the strength to swim to shore. It then took an hour of recuperation after two men saw me and carried me to the shade of a tree.

I was exploring the theme of dreams in the context of augmented reality and their potential impact on sleep/work and forms of everyday resistance. The video is part of this exploration and a representation of the event that took place in the lake. It should be played on repeat and can be sent to mobile phones as a gif (a kind of endless reminder). This was made during the peak period of Covid-19 in China where I was in lockdown and it was no coincidence that this experience was being relived in my dreams at the time. Since making the video it has not returned.
